On September 17, 1947, Jackie Robinson did hit a home run off of Fritz Ostermueller of the Pirates at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh. And he also doubled home a run in that game as he went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs. But the home run came in the fourth inning, not at the end of the game, breaking a scoreless tie. (The RBI double came in the fifth inning, making the score 3-0 of a game that the Dodgers eventually won, 4-2.) But this game did not clinch the pennant for the 1947 Dodgers. Coupled with a Cardinals lost to the Boston Braves, it cut the Dodgers magic number to 2. They clinched a tie the next day when the Cardinals lost again to the Braves, but the Dodgers blew a three run lead to the Pirates when Pittsburgh scored three runs in the 8th inning and Wally Westlake hit a walk off home run in the 9th off Clyde King. In fact, the Dodgers pennant clinching was not at all dramatic. They backed into it, to use baseball slang. After an off day on 9/19, the Dodgers lost two games to the Braves at Ebbets Field. Meanwhile the Cards beat the Chicago Cubs on the 19th and 20th and in the first game of a doubleheader on the 22nd. It was only when the Cubs won the second game of that doubleheader while the Dodgers had a day off did the Dodgers finally clinch the 1947 NL pennant. In Peter Golenbock's book, "Bums", mention is made of many of the players who were particularly racist against Robinson. Ostermueller is not mentioned in that regard. It is true that he hit Robinson with a pitch on May 17 in the first inning. He also went the distance during that game, shutting out the Dodgers 4-0 despite the Dodgers outhitting the Pirates 12 to 4. The Dodgers hit into 4 DPs in that game and left 11 men on base. After being hit by the pitch, Robinson went 2 for 4 in that game, including a bunt single that Ostermueller fielded. But Jackie also made the final out in that game. There is only one mention of Ostermueller in "Bums". And like in that book, in Jackie Robinson's autobiography it is the only time he mentions Ostermueller. On June 24, again in Pittsburgh, the Dodgers beat the Pirates and Ostermueller 4-2. In the fifth inning with runners on first and third and the score tied 2-2, Robinson took advantage of Ostermueller's slow delivery and stole home with the eventual winning run while Furillo stole second. It was the first steal of home in Jackie's MLB career.

True Story: I’m in my sophomore year in high school. I’m on my alma mater’s baseball team and we were lucky enough in 2014 to go play at Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama. The same field where Jackie played at back when he was in the black leagues. The team we were beating handily was giving up run after run. I never played much because I was a bench rider. We were up enough to where I got an at bat. I get walked on four straight pitches (one almost nails my head). Later on in the inning I’m at third with my dad (head coach at the time) coaching third. A line drive allows me to cross home plate safely. Now I have something in common with Chadwick Boseman, and Jackie Robinson; all three of us crossed home plate at historic Rickwood Field (Chadwick because during filming he slid into home). And with my family being there was just icing on the cake. God bless Jackie and God bless Chadwick.
